Catching Fire: Book + Movie Comparison Review

I went to the midnight premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire this Thursday and my expectations for the film were high. The first Hunger Games film was nicely well adapted from book to film and (minus excessive shaky cam) I was really well pleased with it. Well I can safely say that the sequel is amazing and blew my expectations away. 



The amount of times I could count direct quotes from the book was pretty surprising. It was not only such a well done adaptation but a sequel as well. It kept the same tone as the novel and every character was fully fleshed out and developed. It didn't feel like actors playing a part on a screen but real people. The parts that were taken out were minor scenes and didn't effect the plot or derailed it. Things such as Katniss learning about the force field through Haymitch's Games were replaced with her finding out about it through Beetee in the training center or her finding out about the growing animosity and rebellion in the districts while being inside the districts during the victory tour instead of watching a news report in the mayor's office.

Catching Fire posters at the movie theater I went too. They were HUGE and unsurprisingly stunning.

The Hunger Games franchise proves to me that book to movie adaptations can be done well and be successful. It didn't feel like a cheap caricature dancing on the screen hoping to entertain you for two hours. It kept the tone and commentary of the novel and that's why it's so good. The failure of past adaptations (most specifically YA and the huge rush of studios optioning series that haven't even been published yet) are just the studios being lazy and cutting corners and just expecting the built-in fan base to love it just because they're seeing the characters on the big screen. 

All in all, Catching Fire is well worth the hype and you should definitely go and check it out!
