My Review:

*This review contains minor spoilers for the first novel in the series*

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer was the first book I've read for 2016 and I was really excited to read its sequel, The Evolution of Mara Dyer. If you haven't read my review for the first book in the series, check it out here!

I found the ending of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer to be a great cliffhanger in terms of finding out that Jude was still alive and I liked where the plot went in the sequel, The Evolution of Mara Dyer.

What's good about it:

The Plot: There's more plot here than there was in the first installment in the series and I enjoyed the new characters that were introduced in the story and how they were all connected to Mara.

The Romance: I criticized the romance in my review of the first book for being way too dramatic and unrealistic. I enjoyed the romance in this novel, as Noah and Mara's relationship was more fleshed out and I really liked how both Mara and Noah brought different things to the relationship and balanced each other out nicely.

Atmosphere: I love how Michelle Hodkin sets the tone for this series, making it creepy and unnerving. This series is not a straight up horror, but it's disturbing and brings out fear in a more nuanced way.

What's bad about it:

The Writing: My quip with the writing is not absolute, I enjoy Hodkin's writing for the most part except that sometimes she writes cliché phrases and repeats them throughout the text that it becomes annoying. She uses "I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding" a lot and it's completely unnecessary and detracts from the writing.

Final Thoughts:

I loved The Evolution of Mara Dyer and I found it to be a great sequel to the Mara Dyer series. It's entertaining, unnerving, and a complete roller coaster of a story.

Check out my review for the other installments in the series:
